Occupational Therapy Evaluation and Treatment Process

Initial Occupational Therapy Evaluation

A licensed occupational therapist conducts a comprehensive evaluation that includes an occupational profile, observation of daily activities, and standardized assessments to identify strengths, challenges, and priorities for care.

Individualized Plan of Care

Based on the evaluation findings, your therapist develops a measurable plan that defines specific goals, outlines recommended interventions, and identifies expected outcomes appropriate to the client’s age, abilities, and living environment.

In-Home and Telehealth Sessions

Therapy sessions are delivered through in-home or secure telehealth formats, allowing functional skill practice and environmental adaptation directly within the client’s real-life setting.

Ongoing Progress and Re-Evaluation

Progress is documented and reviewed regularly through follow-up assessments and goal tracking. The plan of care is adjusted as needed to maintain continued improvement and functional independence.

How Telehealth Works in Occupational Therapy

Professional Legitimacy

Telehealth OT (also called teletherapy or teleoccupational therapy) is recognized by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).

It must be conducted by a licensed Occupational Therapist (OTR/L) or a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) in accordance with state laws governing remote care.
All sessions are HIPAA-compliant and follow the same documentation and ethical standards as in-person therapy.

What Can Be Addressed Through Telehealth OT

Occupational therapists can effectively:

  • Conduct evaluations and goal setting via secure video platforms
  • Coach parents or caregivers in pediatric sessions
  • Demonstrate therapeutic exercises and fine motor activities using common household items
  • Teach strategies for self-care, sensory regulation, and daily organization
  • Review and modify home or work environments using the client’s camera view
  • Offer follow-up sessions and progress reviews between in-home visits

Limitations

  • Telehealth OT is most effective for clients who:
  • Have a stable internet connection and basic technology setup
  • Do not require hands-on physical assistance or complex adaptive equipment
  • Can engage visually and verbally, or have a caregiver available to assist

Certain procedures such as splint fabrication, detailed mobility assessments, and intensive sensory integration—are typically performed during in-home sessions.
